My favorite lecture about the Sermon on the Mount was given by John W Welch at a symposium titled:
Mormonism and the Temple
Examining an
Ancient Religious Tradition
held October 29, 2012
Utah State University, Logan, Utah
The Scriptures say that Matthew was a tax collector, a publican working for the Romans.
In this paper, Welch looks at the Greek words used in the Sermon, some of which are unique to that occasion. Comparing them to the LXX, Welch suggests that Matthew may be Levi, a levite collecting the temple tax. That radically changes how we might read the Sermon, now in a temple setting.
