The Scriptures say that Matthew was a tax collector, a publican working for the Romans.
In this paper, Welch looks at the Greek words used in the Sermon, some of which are unique to that occasion. Comparing them to the LXX, Welch suggests that Matthew may be Levi, a levite collecting the temple tax. That radically changes how we might read the Sermon, now in a temple setting.
